Nutritional Medicine
In a nutsell: All you need to know
“Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food”(Hippocratic oath)
Food
Food is your fuel and so much more… nutrients are absorbed and transformed to build your cells and any physical structure.
- Literally: You are what you eat!
- Your food choices have direct impact on your physical, but also mental and emotional well-being.
- Remember: eating and living shall be fun! Enjoy eating your food! Celebrate every meal and eat consciously, not emotionally or on “auto-pilot”.
- Choose the right food as often as you possibly can – in general raw food is better than steamed is better than cooked food. Avoid all fried food!
- Organic food is the best choice, fruits and vegetable should be your main ingredients, cut down on animal derived food.
Supplements
Food should provide more than calories… but given the depletion of our soil, to achieve optimal levels of vitamins, minerals and trace elements, you need to supplement with a well designed multivitamin+mineral product
- In addition, ensure proper intake of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids (via flaxseed oil or fish oil)
- This “optimal cellular nutrition” is the easiest and most effective way to achieve and maintain optimal health – to live longer and live better
- Additional targeted supplementation is needed in the following conditions:pregnancy & breast feeding, menstruation & menopause, men beyond 35years, smoking, start with exercise or excessive exercise, vegetarian / vegan, underlying diseases or discomfort (physical, mental, emotional).
The ideal diet
The ideal diet is well balanced, (automatically) calorie constrained and consists of 3 main meals a day + 2 snacks (late morning and afternoon)
- … provides calories mainly from so-called “low GL” carbohydrates and a plant-derived protein source (the satiable part; e.g. soy, beans and legumes, seeds and nuts), is high in fiber, includes good fat! and the filling “bulk” comes from vegetables (or fruits)
- … is accompanied by an ideal life style – a healthy mindset, positive relationships, low (or positive) stress, moderate exercise, sufficient sleep, avoidance of drugs, alcohol, and smoking
